A Time For Choosing

Although Glenn Beck is moving up this list rapidly, at the time of this writing Ronald Reagan is the man – right after my father – whom I most admire and most often quote. Reagan delivered a famed speech on October 27, 1964 which would forever be known as the Time For Choosing speech. At times, it is referred to simply as The Speech because it was so memorable. The speech made such a tremendous impact that it is widely considered the event that launched Reagan’s political career.

In the speech, delivered almost fifty years ago, Reagan warned America about policies he perceived as evil and which, he believed, would lead to the downfall of the United States. Though spoken almost 50 years ago, Reagan’s words apply more today. So it is now that I warn you of our impending doom as a free nation, and I’ll use Ronald Reagan’s words to do it.

"The Founding Fathers  knew a government can’t control the economy without controlling people. And they knew when a government sets out to do that, it must use force and coercion to achieve its purpose. So we have come to a time for choosing."

This rings true today when applied to the socialist residing in the White House and the congressional leaders presently running the circus in Washington. Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, along with all of the Democrats in the House and Senate, have forced the passage of legislation that the vast majority of Americans do not want.

The offices these progressives hold are constitutionally defined as being representatives of the people. Let anyone among you dare argue that they are representing the people while forcing passage of direction changing legislation which is so strongly opposed by a such a substantial majority of Americans, to wit, ObamaCare.

These progressives have moved their political ideology so far to the left that they have moved beyond being merely progressives; they have become true Workers of the World Unite Socialists and they have done so over the objection of an overwhelming majority of Americans.

The fact that these progressives are no longer acting as representatives of the people is irrefutable, by definition.

That they continue to advance Obama’s socialist agenda, despite the opposition of the vast majority of Americans is only explainable as arrogance on the grandest of scales, because they truly believe they no longer have to answer to the voters. What Americans want no longer matters to those who purport to govern, because they know so much better than we do what is best for us. How dare they?

These Socialists continue to force the passage of legislation which is not only opposed by the American people, but much of it actually violates the Constitution. That is a minor inconvenience to the progressives who are hell bent on circumventing it.

That they are now ignoring the will of the people and ignoring the Constitution so so openly is frightening. By now, you have seen clips of Town Hall meetings across America where elected representatives of the people have brazenly told constituents that they are the Federal Government, and will do as they please. Shut up and take it, we have been told repeatedly.

The most glaring example of this behavior occurred during the health care reform debate, but it did not stop there. Every day, these socialists are spending our money on such a massive scale that is unfathomable and they are doing so despite the tremendous objection of the American people. Because they know better.

Believe me when I say this, because I have met and known several Congressmen and Senators: they were not conferred by God with superior intelligence, they are no smarter than any of the rest of us, and they do not know what is best for us. They certainly have no greater capacity for understanding the spending of trillions of dollars than  any of the rest of us.

Obama and Congressional Democrats are driving America into a hole that will be so deep by the time they leave office that recovery may not be possible. They are ruining this great country on purpose, with malice aforethought, so that they can fundamentally transform it.

In any other job in America it would be patently absurd to keep your job if you failed as magnificently as the Democrats have failed in governing the country these last two years. Yet these incredibly arrogant morons want us to re-elect them in November. The explanation for their failure is that it is all Bush’s fault. They are counting on the fact that they have always been re-elected before, despite their incompetence. They truly believe Americans are too dumb, too lazy or don’t care enough to rise up and do anything about it and historically they have been right.

There was this one time, not that long ago, that someone told you the same things I am telling you now. Unemployment was high, interest rates were higher than ever, inflation ran rampant and there was a general malaise from which the country couldn’t escape. As a free people, we had the good sense to listen to the man and the good sense to elect him. He changed the course of the ship of state and in doing so saved this country. We were so pleased with his results that we re-elected him four years later. In the biggest landslide in history, Ronald Reagan won 49 states in 1984.

There is too much at stake for Americans to ignore. It is encouraging that millions of Americans have shorn long term party affiliations, abandoning both major parties, in favor of the Tea Party. It is encouraging, but it is not enough. It is incumbent upon all Americans to rise up and save this great nation. We must start by heeding the words of Ronald Reagan; We Have Come To A Time For Choosing.
